Servings: 60 chewies
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup plain unsweetened greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup finely shredded carrot
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup oatmeal (old fashioned)
- 1 egg lightly beaten
- 1/3 cup chicken broth dog safe, no onion/garlic - can swap with water if in doubt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
- Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or spray with non-stick spray.
- In medium bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder.
- In mixer bowl add yogurt, carrot, cheddar and oatmeal and half of flour mixture.
- Mix on low speed and gradually add the remaining flour mixture.
- Drizzle in the egg and broth.
- Mix on medium speed until well combined.
- Scoop 1 teaspoon portions, roll to form a ball and place onto prepared baking sheet.
- Use a fork to flatten slightly (they will puff a little during baking.) They do not spread much during baking, so you can place them close together on pan.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until lightly browned on the outside but still soft on the inside.
- Remove and allow to cool.
- Keep in refrigerator for a few days or freeze. *
Notes
*Homemade softer pet treats (don't have preservatives)- They keep best in the refrigerator or freezer.

These are fantastic treats. Easy to make and my dogs loved them! I would recommend to freeze what you don’t plan to use because the recipe makes a lot and mine got moldy on the 4th day.
Christina Verrelli
Hi Jesi – Glad your dogs enjoyed them! Yes, the homemade treats, especially chewy ones, can mold more quickly – I’ll add a note to the recipe! TY!

Thank you. I want to make these, but my pup only weighs in at 5 pounds at 16 weeks. I have a tiny mold that I’m going to use so I will have a lot going into the freezer!
Tanya
Just made these and my dog loves them. After reading the comments, I will freeze them to store. It is nice to give them something they love without all the preservatives. Thanks so much sore the great and easy recipe!
Christina Verrelli
I agree – nice to have something homemade with simple ingredients on hand. You can always move a couple to the refrigerator every couple days. …or they thaw pretty quickly on the counter.

One of my dogs can’t have cheese – should I substitute something else or could it just be eliminated? Thank you!
Christina Verrelli
Hello PK – You could try swapping the cheese with 1/4 cup more carrot and 1/4 cup more oats. Or you can check out my whole Pet Treat Index for some non-dairy options.
Lyla
this recipe is amazing i even customized them by making them more crunchy or more chewy, i will be using this for a long time.
Christina Verrelli
So glad you are enjoying Lyla!!

How do I make these a little more chewy? I tasted them and they tasted like little breads… should I just add more cheese and carrots? Or more yoghurt?
Christina Verrelli
Yes, they are a little softer – “bread-like” texture – I had a request from someone for a texture for her older dogs.
Wendy Bird
Conversion to UK measures please!
Christina Verrelli
Thanks for the suggestion Wendy!
Anita
Can these be dehydrated to keep longer?
Christina Verrelli
Hi Anita – you could certainly give it a try! I haven’t tried myself but should help dry them out!
Alison
Please make sure y’all are using dog safe chicken broth! Onions and garlic are poisonous to dogs and are often in broth!!!
Christina Verrelli
Thanks Alison – I’ll specify in ingredient list.
Sharon
Hi, one of my dogs ( Chihuahua) is allergic to wheat flour. Can I use coconut flour and do you know how much? Oh and do you know how many calories are in one? Thank you
Christina Verrelli
Hi Sharon – I haven’t tried with coconut flour – I think I have made with oat flour. I would add a little less of the flour, let sit 5 min. see what the texture is and then adjust. Will probably absorb liquid differently from regular wheat flour.
Christina Verrelli
Based on the original recipe – the estimate for the calories is about 23. (I just calculated and added at the bottom of the recipe)
Janet R.
Can you make these with either buck wheat flour or regular flour instead of whole wheat? Thank you:)
Christina Verrelli
Hi Janet – whatever flour your pup is allowed to have should work fine – sometimes with different flours, you just need to tweak the liquid amounts a little.
Janet R.
Thank you! Today’s the day we give them a try for one my gang’s 16th birthday😊🍪🎂🎈
Emilia
The treats are good, but onion and garlic is not safe for dogs. Anyone who makes these, please do not use onion or garlic. Otherwise the treats are great.
Christina Verrelli
Thanks Emilia – Onion and garlic are not called for in the recipe and I did make a note that any broths used should not contain those ingredients either. Water is always a good substitute. Take care!
Terri
I wanted to make these for training treats for my lab who has food allergies. Since I wanted them small I pushed the dough flat on a baking sheet. I took it out after about 12 minutes and sliced into thin strips then returned to the oven for a few more minutes to dry the cut edges more. Then I cut them into small cubes and allowed to cool. So far they are a hit! Thanks for the recipe!
Jamie
Haven’t actually made these yet because my puppy literally chewed up the paper recipe I had printed. I told her she’s supposed to wait for me to make the actual treats, not eat the recipe. LOL
Glad I was able to refind this page. Will make them this weekend.
Christina Verrelli
oh my goodness! LOL Hope she likes the actual treat more than the paper recipe!
Tiffany
Hello, would sealing these with a vacuum sealer help them keep for a few days if I’m traveling?
